Prompts

Bangkok through a Helios lens, nine frames

Bangkok through a Helios lens, nine frames

A 1990s Japanese photobook look on the Chao Phraya: pale-blue slip dress, ivory cardigan, a Helios 44-2 lens wide open. The file holds three prompts and the folder holds nine pictures. Three of them match a prompt.

Seated at a small wooden café table, cheek resting on one hand, smiling down at a phone, coffee cup, dessert plate and paperback on the table
Prompt two: café table, phone, the amused smile.
Close-up by a café window over the river, wired earphones in, fingertips at her lips, a small music player beside a coffee cup
Prompt three: wired earphones and the player by the cup.
At a café table by the window, scrunching her face mid-bite of a pastry, croissant and coffee in the foreground
No prompt kept. Mid-bite.
Sitting on a riverside bench with wired earphones, hand at one ear, a portable player on the bench beside her
No prompt kept. The earphones again, outdoors.
Sitting at a terrace table by the river, smiling and pointing at the camera, coffee cup on the table
No prompt kept. Terrace, pointing at the lens.
Seen through the blurred back of a wooden chair, smiling with a finger to her cheek, holding a takeaway coffee
No prompt kept. Through a chair.
Seated on a wooden bench by the river with her hair in a low bun, hands in her lap, looking out at the water
No prompt kept. The bun back on the bench.
Sitting on a café chair by the river holding a coffee cup, smiling at the camera
No prompt kept. Coffee by the river.

The three that match, match closely. Prompt one’s low bun and passing boat, prompt two’s long loose hair and coffee-plate-paperback still life, prompt three’s wired earphones with the cable running across the frame and the little player resting beside the cup. Each run took the props of its own paragraph and none of the others’.

The palette held across all nine, including the six with no prompt. Pale blue, ivory, faded grey, muted green, and no warm cast anywhere. All three prompts end on a list of what the colour must not be — no orange, no yellow cast, no golden-hour glow, no digital HDR — and nothing else in them asks for warmth. That is the kind of negative this collection says works: one nothing else in the prompt contradicts.

Ignored: EXTREME SHALLOW DEPTH OF FIELD, enormous soft circular highlights, in capitals, in all three. The backgrounds are soft, but the river, the boats and the skyline are still readable in every frame. Nothing dissolves into abstract shapes, and there isn’t a single round bokeh highlight in the set.

The sparkle is stamped twice on most of these — a large faint one with a small dark one beside it. As far as I can tell that means the picture went through the tool twice, which fits a set where six frames came from turns that weren’t saved.

I write two things here: notes from a homelab that mostly runs Proxmox, and essays in Vietnamese about a country I left. The technical posts are whatever broke that week, written down so it costs you less time than it cost me.
