This is the privacy policy for capturedbynguyen.com, a personal blog written by Peter Nguyen. It describes what this site collects, why, and what you can do about it. It is written in plain language rather than legal boilerplate, and it describes what the site actually does today.
The short version
- This site has no accounts, no newsletter, and no mailing list. There is nothing to sign up for.
- It uses Google Analytics to count visits, and Google AdSense to show ads. Both set cookies.
- If you leave a comment or use the contact form, what you type is stored on this site.
- Nothing is sold. Nothing is shared beyond the services named below.
Analytics
This site uses Google Analytics 4 to understand which posts people read and roughly where readers come from. It records things like the pages you view, how long you stay, your approximate location derived from your IP address, and your browser and device type. It sets cookies to recognise a returning browser.
I use this in aggregate. I do not try to identify individual readers, and there is no facility on this site for doing so.
You can opt out across all sites with Google’s Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
Advertising
This site carries advertising through Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies and similar identifiers to serve ads, and may use your prior visits to this and other websites to show ads relevant to you.
You can control how Google personalises the ads you see at My Ad Center, and opt out of personalised advertising from many providers at aboutads.info. Opting out does not remove ads; it makes them less relevant.
I do not choose which specific ads appear, and I do not receive any personal information about you from Google as a result of them.
Comments
When you leave a comment, this site stores the name, email address and website you enter, the comment itself, your IP address, and your browser’s user agent string. The IP address and user agent are kept to help identify spam and abuse.
Every comment is held for approval before it appears. Your email address is never published and never shared. It may be sent to Gravatar as a hashed value to look up a profile picture, which is how avatars appear next to comments.
If you leave a comment, your browser may store cookies with the name, email and website you entered, so you do not have to type them again. They last one year and you can clear them at any time in your browser.
The contact form
If you use the contact page, the name, email address, subject and message you enter are stored in this site’s database so I can read and reply to them, along with your IP address and the page you sent the message from. Nothing entered there is published, and nothing is added to any mailing list.
Embedded content from other sites
Posts may embed content such as videos or images hosted elsewhere. Embedded content behaves exactly as if you had visited that other website, which may collect data about you, set cookies, and track your interaction with it. That is governed by their privacy policies, not this one.
How long things are kept
Comments and their metadata are kept indefinitely, so that conversations on old posts stay readable. Contact form messages are kept as long as they are useful and deleted when they are not. Analytics data is retained according to Google’s own retention settings.
What you can ask for
You can ask me for a copy of any personal data this site holds about you, or ask me to delete it. Write to me through the contact page and say which comments or messages you mean. I will not delete data where I am required to keep it, and deleting a comment does not delete the replies other people wrote to it.
Children
This site is not directed at children under 13, and I do not knowingly collect information from them.
Security, honestly stated
This site runs on shared hosting and is served over HTTPS. I take reasonable care, but no website can promise perfect security and I am not going to pretend otherwise. Please do not send me anything sensitive through the contact form.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, the date at the top will change with it.
